Apple Picking Season with Hans Hedberg - The Master of Glaze

September 7, 2026

Having a garden is great in many ways, but picking apples for hours isn't my idea of fun. While most of them are now rotting in the compost I have the luck to get back to work and enjoy a never rotting apple with the most fantastic glaze. Ceramicist and artist Hans Hedberg's sculptures have fascinated people all over the world. Among them are his large eggs and fruits with fantastic glazes.

‍

Hans Hedberg was born in 1917 in Köpmanholmen outside Örnsköldsvik into one of the town's large industrial families, but became interested in art at an early age.

After graduating from high school, he apprenticed with Otto Sköld and Isaac Grünewald before his joy of discovery took him to Italy and France.

He settled in Biot on the French Riviera and quickly became part of the artistic scene. He hung out with Picasso and Matisse and for a short period had Chagall as a ceramics student.
It is above all the large fruits and eggs, inspired by his grandfather's bird's eggs, that made Hans Hedberg famous.

In the studio in Biot, he put a lot of work into making the glazes as lifelike as possible.

But even though France was his home, he returned to Köpmanholmen and the High Coast every summer. Hans Hedberg died in 2007, aged 89.

Hans Hedberg, sculpture, mid1900s -now available.
